Entry from Hungarian publication "Beat MiniLexicon" from 1971
Jackson Five – A real teen group, the youngest of the five brothers, Mike, was born on 29th August, 1959, Marlon is a year older than him, Jermain-Jim is 17 years old, Toriano-Tito 18, and the oldest, most experienced among them is Jackie, originally Sigismund-Esco Jackson, who is going to be 20 on 4th May, 1971. They were spotted at a talent contest by the then Supremes-star singer, Diana Ross, who became the manager for the boys. Nothing proves better that she was right, than the fact that their album, I Want You Back sold 2 million copies in the US alone. Their style is captivating, energetic and the clear singing of little Mike, with its soul beats characteristic of our age, is extremely fresh. Their father used to be a blues-guitarist. He said: What my sons are capable of, was partly inherited from me, the rest is hard work and study. – Nonetheless, there is yet a sixth Jackson in store, who is approaching his seventh birthday and is getting to know the secrets of the conga drum.

Block 2: TV show appearances galore
Carol Burnett Show Jan 25, 1975, Sonny and Cher Show, Bob Hope Show, last bit featuring the very-very young Janet Jackson

Commentary - on "discovering" the Jackson Five

A short extract from a book I read recently by Mary of the Supremes:
Mary Wilson - Dreamgirls. The Life of a Supreme (p.278)

„In October we hosted The Hollywood Palace, which meant that Diana hosted, and we just sang. On this show, Diana introduced the Jackson Five in their first national television appearance.
Everyone at Motown knew that Bobby Taylor of the Vancouvers had discovered the Jackson Five and had told Berry about them. Berry didn’t have time to see them audition in person, so he had asked Bobby to take them over to the Graystone Ballroom, where Berry kept a whole batch of video equipment, and tape their act for him to look at later. Bobby taped the Jackson brothers, and Berry signed them immediately. Many artists had come through Motown, but few of the newer acts had made it big. Berry knew the Jackson Five would be big money-makers, and Motown set out to promote them from the very start. Part of the promotion was that Diana had discovered them. A few weeks later, Diana hosted a party in the Jacksons’ honor for three hundred guests at the exclusive Daisy Club in Hollywood. I didn’t know anything about it until I received my invitation via telegram.”

In a major marketing coup, Berry Gordy and Motown decided to attach the group to an established star to increase public curiosity. Thus, it was decided that Motown star Diana Ross would "discover" the group as was explained in all early press kits.[4] According to their official Motown biography, referenced in several early interviews and liner notes, Diana Ross (and, in some versions of the story, Berry Gordy alongside her) was introduced to The Jackson 5 by Gary, Indiana's mayor, Richard G. Hatcher, at a benefit concert that The Jackson 5 were described as having played for the mayor in 1969. Impressed, Ross (and Gordy) had the act signed.

Gordy moved The Jackson Five and Joseph to California, and he and Suzanne de Passe began the process of grooming them as the label's next big act, while the rest of the family remained in Gary. While looking for a house in California, Joseph, Jermaine, Tito, and Jackie lived with Berry Gordy, Marlon and Michael lived with Diana Ross in her California home.

Ross was a close friend and was named in Jackson's will as the custodian of his children in the event of the death of his mother Katherine Jackson. (CNN 3rd July 2009: Jackson's will)
